Upper Twp. Schools Shine Light on Energy Savings

Sean Yates

By Johanna Hovik

PETERSBURG – Upper Township School Board discussed the Energy Savings Improvement Program at its Nov. 16 meeting.
Upper Township Schools are in the midst of a district-wide energy savings plan in hopes of saving the township millions of dollars. This plan has been in the works for over two and a half years and is hoping to be completed in the first quarter of 2016.
Sean Yates, representative of Honeywell Energy Service Group, gave a brief presentation on the program’s progress. Many upgrades are being implemented throughout the three Upper Township Schools including over 4,000 light fixtures upgraded to light-emitting devices.
Additional upgrades include occupancy sensors being installed in vending areas, fans in high ceiling areas, such as the gymnasium, to help reduce heating and cooling costs are also being installed.
Massive hot water heaters are being replaced with smaller, more efficient units as well as rooftop units.
The schools’ kitchens are being upgraded, including new energy-efficient appliances and overall building envelope improvements are included in this overhaul, which will seal roof lines and door sweeps.
Honeywell plans to provide results showing the benefits of the Energy Savings Improvement Program once the progress is complete and progress can be tracked.
This information will be included in future school board meetings which are public.
