DENNISVILLE — In one of the finest examples of a community coming together in a time of grief, citizens of Dennisville gathered at the Dennisville Post Office on Fri., April 20 to honor the late Frank Germana.
Germana, who served as Dennisville Postmaster from 1991 to 2012, passed away this past January after a courageous battle with osteosarcoma, leaving behind his wife, Dianna, and two daughters, Stephanie and Shelly.
As the face of the Dennisville Post Office, Germana was considered by many to be a vital part of the community. During the ceremony held in his honor, several friends, family, and prominent members of the community spoke fondly of Germana and the legacy he left behind.
“Frank was an amazingly trustworthy person,” said Jerry McManus. “He always rooted for everyone to do well.”
Others close to Germana reminisced about meaningful and friendly conversations they would have when visiting the post office.
“He was never too busy to stop and say hello,” said one of Germana’s many friends present.
Germana was also remembered for his multifaceted volunteer work, which included trading in lunch breaks to sell stamps at the local senior center, coaching sports teams at the local elementary and middle schools and being the unofficial voice of the Dennisville Christmas House tour.
“Frank was a man of integrity,” said Dan Dutton, a childhood friend of Germana who was reunited with him after moving to Dennisville several years ago.
Along with the kind words in Germana’s honor, Germana’s family was presented with a plaque from the United States Post Office that commemorated the former postmaster’s contribution to the community. The family was also honored with a bench placed in front of the Dennisville Post Office that was dedicated to the life of Germana.
The ceremony, which featured the Dennis Township Middle School Band and Imogene Nuss, a young elementary student and violinist, was an intense and moving experience for everyone present.
The ceremony was held on what would have been Germana and his wife’s 38th wedding anniversary.
