Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announced the winners of their American History Essay Competition on Friday, Feb. 13. 101 essays were submitted from students in fifth through eighth grade in four area schools and four home schooled students; the theme was Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
In Grade 5, Quinn Bithel, of West Cape May Elementary placed first. In Grade 6, Claudia Melchiorre, of Crest Memorial placed first, and Grace Rogers and Daniel Patterson, also of Crest Memorial, were first and second runners up. In Grade 7, Siani Aspenburg, of Crest Memorial placed first; Joseph Farmer of Crest Memorial was first runner up and Emily Freeman of Bishop McHugh Regional School was second runner up. In Grade 8, Maria Osler, of Bishop McHugh Regional School placed first; Laura Colombo of Middle Township Middle School was second runner up and Margaret Chase of Crest Memorial was second runner up.
Prizes were awarded at a the Rutgers Extension Building on South Dennis Road. Mr. Robert Heinly of the Cape May Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts gave a presentation on “School Days in the Victorian Era. The winning eighth grade essay by Osler is published in this week’s issue of the Herald.
