COLD SPRING – A 43-year-old Lower Township man is in Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $1 million bail, facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and numerous weapons offenses.
State Police Sgt. Gregory Williams said Lower Township Police Department responded to Lund’s Fisheries in Cold Spring in reference to a gunshot victim at 10:32 p.m. Oct. 3.
An initial investigation revealed the female victim had a shotgun wound to her lower left leg while on fishing vessel ‘Storm.’
Ernest Davis of Lower Township was discovered by police on an adjacent fishing vessel ‘Miss Tamara,’ and was subsequently arrested.
Both vessels were docked at the time of the incident.
The victim was transported to AtlanticCare Regional Medical Center where she underwent multiple surgeries, and her left foot was amputated. She is currently in stable condition.
Davis was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and numerous weapons offenses.
He was remanded to the correctional center in lieu of bail.
The shotgun used in the incident has not been recovered and police say they suspect Davis threw the shotgun into the water.
Attempts to locate the gun are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
New Jersey State Police Marine Services Unit, New Jersey State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office also responded.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
