Weapon, Illicit Drugs Found; 2 Charged

The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person(s) named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
WILDWOOD — On Friday, Aug.24, 2018 members of the Wildwood Police Department Uniform Patrol and Detective Divisions, responded to the area of Schellenger and Ocean avenues for the report of a male subject who had brandished a handgun.
While responding to the incident, additional information was developed indicating that the subject with the handgun was driving in a blue Chevrolet Blazer and was traveling in the 200 east block of Schellenger Avenue.
Shortly thereafter, a motor vehicle matching the description of the vehicle being operated by the individual with the handgun was located in the 200 east block of Schellenger Avenue and a motor vehicle stop was initiated.
While on the scene, the driver was identified as Carl Smith, 33, residing in Clayton. During the course of the investigation, Smith was identified as the subject responsible for brandishing a handgun.
After further investigation, it was discovered that Smith was engaged in a controlled dangerous substance transaction with another individual, who was identified as William Atkinson, 34, and another unidentified white male.
During the course of the CDS transaction, Smith brandished the handgun. Ultimately, Smith placed the handgun back in his vehicle. As a result of a physical search of the vehicle, a black Airsoft/pellet handgun was located.
As a result of the investigation, the following criminal charges were issued:
Carl Smith was charged with possession of a weapon (imitation firearm) (a crime of the fourth degree), unlawful possession of a weapon (a crime of the third degree), certain person not possess a weapon (imitation firearm) (a crime of the fourth degree), possession of a weapon (knife) (a crime of the third degree), unlawful possession of a weapon (a crime of the fourth degree), certain person not to possess weapons (knife)(a crime of the fourth degree) and possession of marijuana (a disorderly persons offense).
William Atkinson was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana (a crime of the fourth degree), possession with intent to distribute marijuana within 500 feet of a public place (Wildwood Boardwalk) (a crime of the third degree), possession of marijuana (a disorderly persons offense) and possession of CDS paraphernalia (a disorderly persons offense).
Atkinson was issued his criminal charges and released on a summons complaint. Smith was issued criminal complaints and lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
