RIO GRANDE — An employee theft complaint from Wal-Mart on Dec. 7 at 7:29 a.m. took Middle Township police to the Route 9 store. When they arrived, they learned that the suspect, Anthony Singletary, 42, of Whitesboro, had fled the scene on foot.
He was last seen running north on Route 9. Officers searched and located him, then took off on a foot pursuit north along the railroad tracks.
Officers followed him from King Street north onto Matthews Avenue, Whitesboro.
They apprehended him there. Over $900 of alleged stolen property was recovered on Singletary and the route he took while fleeing.
Investigation revealed that store authorities had been investigating incidents of theft and on that date caught Singletary allegedly in the act of stealing items. As he was confronted, he fled the store.
Singletary was charged with theft, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. He also had an outstanding warrant from Egg Harbor City. He was remanded to county jail in lieu of $17,000 bail.
Additionally, during the foot pursuit, Patrolman Felix Cruz sustained an ankle injury.
