NORTH WILDWOOD — Police here have charged a man with attempted murder, terroristic threats and weapons offenses in connection with an incident that occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
According to department spokesman Capt. Robert Caruso, police arrested Thomas Kazanes, 57, and transported him to county jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
A police release stated that officers were called to a residence in the 1200 block of Ocean Avenue where they found Kim Sullivan, 40, on her couch with several stab wounds to her chest. Police said Kazanes stabbed Sullivan, his girlfriend, after the two had a verbal argument.
Sullivan was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Division for treatment.
The incident remains under investigation by North Wildwood police and the county Prosecutor’s Office.
This was not the first time Kananes was involved with law enforcement.
A story in the Herald archives reported that Kazanes was previously arrested in the 1200 block of Ocean Avenue, North Wildwood on simple assault charges on March 1, 2000. The name of the female victim was not released. According to the report, Kazanes was held in county jail on $5,000 bail.
A separate archived story reported another arrest on May 12, 2003. Kazanes, then 52, was charged with burglary, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. He was held in county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
In an Appellate Division decision, a conviction against Kazanes for the disorderly persons offenses of wandering with the intent of obtaining drugs was overturned. In addition to the wandering charge, Kazanes was arrested for resisting arrest after a Wildwood officer witnessed an interaction between Kazanes and a known drug dealer.
The appeals court found that while Kazanes was caught in the act of a drug deal, the officer’s testimony at trial did not sufficiently describe the “wandering” behavior required in the text of the statute. The conviction and fine of $200 were vacated, but the resisting arrest charge stuck.
