By Herald Staff

LOWER TOWNSHIP POLICE RELEASE:
NORTH CAPE MAY — On Jan. 9 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Lower Township police responded to calls reporting a female screaming and being beaten by a male in the parking lot behind “D” building of the Channel Apartments Complex.
When patrol officers arrived, they observed a Sherman W. Miller, 19, of the complex had become involved in a heated domestic dispute with his 21-year-old girlfriend while the two were seated in her vehicle in the parking lot. The female advised police officers that Miller grabbed her by the hair, dragged her out of her vehicle onto the asphalt parking lot for several feet, causing scratches to her body, then punched her in the face causing a bloody lip.
According to police, a group of 15 people or more from the apartment complex came out of their apartments and were standing in the vicinity of the police cars.
When Patrolman Robert Fessler advised Miller that he was under arrest for assaulting his girlfriend, Miller became highly belligerent and began yelling profanities at police officers and attempted to physically resist his arrest. When placed in the rear of the police car, Miller attempted to break the rear side window out by repeatedly banging his head forcefully against the window. Miller then began kicking the car door to prevent the officers from closing the door.
While officers were attempting to restrain Miller, a 15-year-old male in the crowd approached Patrolman Shaun Whittington, yelling at the officers over the arrest of Miller. After being told several times by officers to back away, the juvenile was advised he was under arrest for Obstruction of Justice. However, the 15 year old also physically resisted his arrest and had to be restrained by officers at the scene in order to be handcuffed.
Both subjects were then transported to the Lower Township Police Department for processing where Sherman Miller was charged with simple assault during the course of domestic violence incident, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Miller was lodged in county jail on a no contact order with bail set at $1,500, no 10 percent, by Lower Township Municipal Court Judge, David DeWeese.
The 15 year old juvenile was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. After which he was turned over to the custody of his father.
