Tip on Heroin Delivery Brings Arrest, Seizure of 120 bags, Gun, Cash

By Herald Staff

COLD SPRING — A tip to Lower Township police that a large delivery of heroin was being planned to this community resulted in the April 23 arrest of a Whitesboro man.
According to Lower Township police, aided by Middle Township police and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force, the information was received about 7 p.m. of the intended delivery.
Detectives and patrol personnel located a vehicle in the area that matched the description of the vehicle that the suspects were reported to be using.
As patrol personnel stopped the vehicle for a violation, and walked up to the vehicle, they observed numerous packets of heroin strewn across the rear of the vehicle, along with rice.
About 100 bags of heroin were found in the vehicle.
At that point, detectives arrived on scene after the motor vehicle stop. The scene was photographed, and the suspect identified as Carlos D. Ames, 28, of the 2200 block of Route 9 south, Whitesboro, was arrested and the vehicle returned to its owner.
Ames was taken to Lower Township police headquarters for processing.
Additional follow-up and investigation led Lower Township, Middle Township and county detectives to recover an additional 20 bags of heroin along with $3,000 in cash, and a loaded .40 caliber handgun and ammunition at Ames’ residence.
Ames was charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of a handgun.
Municipal Court Judge David DeWeese set Ames’ bail at $50,000 cash. He was remanded to county jail in lieu of bail.
Detectives and Patrol Personnel from Lower Township, Middle Township Police Departments along with members of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic’s Task Force investigated the multi-jurisdictional case.
