NORTH CAPE MAY– A 17-year-old moped operator was charged Wednesday with driving while intoxicated after he drove past a Lower Township police on a moped with no headlights on.
Patrolwoman Jennifer Anzelone was on routine patrol in the North Cape May section of the township when she observed the male operating the moped at about 8 p.m., police said.
Anzelone conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area of Bayshore and Old Mill Drive and detected a “strong odor or alcoholic beverage” coming from the moped operator and a 16 year-old boy running behind him.
The unidentified driver was transported to the Lower Township Police Department and issued a breathalyzer test.
In addition to facing driving while intoxicated charges, the moped rider has been charged with possession and consumption of alcholic beverages by a minor, failure to use headlights and being an unlicensed driver.
The 16-year-old male was issed a local ordinance violation for underage consumption of alcohol, police said.
The juveniles were released to their parents after the moped was towed and impounded.
