State Police Investigate Theft of Trooper, Corrections Uniforms

By Herald Staff

STOW CREEK — State Police continue to investigate the theft of State Police uniforms and Salem County Corrections Department uniforms from a Stow Creek Township dry cleaner earlier this month.
Sometime between closing hours on Friday, Jan. 2, and opening on Saturday, Jan. 3, Cook’s Cleaners on Shiloh Pike in Stow Creek, Cumberland County, was burglarized. The store was ransacked, but only some customers’ clothing items were stolen. Among the clothing were several uniform shirts and trousers from the New Jersey State Police and shirts from the Salem County Corrections Department.
There have been no reports of anyone attempting to impersonate officers using this clothing, but State Police encourage citizens who encounter a trooper in uniform who is not accompanied by a marked State Police vehicle to call 911 if they are concerned about the authenticity of the trooper.
Most importantly, the uniforms stolen were incomplete because they lacked the distinctive hat with the triangle badge and all of the leather gear that makes the State Police uniform so unique.
The burglary and theft remains an active investigation.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Bridgeton Station at 856-451-0101.
