CREST HAVEN — The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office accepted kudos from the state for its aggressive targeting of street gangs and drug distribution.
Jose Cordero, director of state Gangs, Guns and Violent Crime Control, congratulated county Prosecutor Robert Taylor for his office’s efforts at a press conference Nov. 5.
Cordero noted that the county’s Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Task Force adheres to Gov. Jon S. Corzines Safe Streets and Neighborhoods initiative by targeting those groups and individuals that pose the greatest threat to the safety of county residents.
Although this area is relatively fortunate compared to the state’s urban areas where gangs and narcotics are more prevalent, Taylor said there is still substantial gang and drug activity particularly in Wildwood, Middle Township and Woodbine.
Taylor noted the three-month investigation from earlier this year that netted 35 gang-related drug arrests concentrated in an open-air drug market on the 100 block of W. Baker Avenue in Wildwood.
In addition to the arrests, the task force executed six search warrants in Wildwood and Woodbine and seized over ten ounces of narcotics and three handguns.
Cordero said the county’s program has made substantial steps to send the message that there is no safe place in New Jersey for gangs and drug dealers to operate.
“The initiative in Cape May, led by Prosecutor Taylor, succeeded because of the strong work of a county task force that specifically focused on identifying, investigating and arresting gang members and their associates who traffic in illegal drugs,” state Attorney General Anne Milgram said in a release.
