Septuagenarian Faces Shoplifting Charges

CAPE MAY – Nancy C. Fleming, 70, of Lower Gwynedd, Pa., was arrested for allegedly shoplifting from three area businesses Sept. 26 at approximately 7:40 p.m., Cape May Police Department Captain Robert E. Sheehan announced in a Sept. 28 release.
Police were dispatched to a business in the 400 block of West Perry Street in Cape May at 6:23 p.m. regarding a shoplifting incident that had been discovered on surveillance video from earlier in the day. Based on this video information a description of the suspected shoplifter was relayed to officers.
Shortly thereafter, Officer Ashlie Campbell located the suspect in the Washington Street Mall area. Patrolman Eric Lashley’s investigation resulted in the recovery of the stolen property (approximately $3,000) as well as additional merchandise from two more local businesses that had not realized they had been targeted by the suspected shoplifter.
Approximately $250 in merchandise was recovered and returned to a retail store in the 400 block of Lafayette Street while approximately $25 in merchandise was recovered for a store in the 800 block of Broadway in West Cape May.
Fleming is charged in Cape May Municipal Court with two counts of shoplifting and was released on a summons. She was also charged in West Cape May Municipal Court with shoplifting and released on a summons. Fleming’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. in Cape May Municipal Court.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
