Police Find Suspect under Bed; Charge with Armed Robbery

WILDWOOD — A local man was charged with a grocery store robbery after six days in hiding.
On Nov. 4 at 10 a.m., Wildwood police responded to Bautista’s Grocery, 3703 Pacific Ave., on a report of an armed robbery.
Upon arrival on the scene, it was ascertained that a Hispanic male who was approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a medium build and a goatee had been the perpetrator.
According to police, the male subject had threatened the store clerk, Angela Sanchez, with a carving knife, and exited the store with in excess of $1,300 that he had removed from the cash register.
Upon viewing the surveillance video of the incident, and following up leads that were developed, the perpetrator was identified as Aaron H. Velez, 30, of the 100 block of East Spicer Avenue.
A search warrant was obtained and executed on the property during the evening of Nov. 4. Velez was not located, but a carving knife was seized from the property.
A warrant for the arrest of Velez was issued on charges of first-degree armed robbery, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
On Nov. 10, Wildwood detectives received information that VeIez was in an apartment in the 200 block of East Burk Avenue, where he was found hiding under a bed at about 7 p.m. He was arrested without incident.
At the time of his arrest, Velez was found to be in possession of a controlled dangerous substance suboxone and possession of a hypodermic needle. He received additional complaints for these offenses.
Valez was lodged in county jail in lieu of $250,000 cash bail set by Judge David DeWeese.
