Man Pleads Not Guilty to Parking Meter Theft

By Herald Staff

WILDWOOD — According to the Press of Atlantic City, a former city employee plead not guilty to charges of stealing quarters collected from city parking meters on Friday, Sept. 11.
A previous Herald story listed the stolen sum as $980.60.
Commissioner Gary DeMarzo, who oversees the Department of Revenue and Finance, tipped off police about the possibility of criminal activity by a certain employee that was as-signed to the parking meter maintenance and collection division.
An investigation by the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division lead to the arrest of Albert Peter, 72, of Rio Grande on July 20.
Peter, a long-time employee of the city, admitted his involvement in the theft, according to a police report. Two bank bags were found by police in Peter’s car, containing $980.60, mostly quarters
Peter was charged with theft and released on a summons. Police did not know over what period the thefts had taken place. The incident remains under investigation.
DeMarzo said in a press release that there had been several enhancements to the auditing and security of the parking division.
“These security features were well worth the investment and although I cannot stop peo-ple from being dishonest, I can certainly hold them accountable,” he said in a release.
