PRESS RELEASE FROM OCEAN CITY POLICE:
OCEAN CITY — On May 31 at 2:32 a.m., the Ocean City Police received a call about a burglary in progress in the unit block of E. Atlantic Blvd. The caller reported seeing a subject enter a local ice cream business through a window. The caller indicated that the subject may be armed with a weapon. As police Officers responded a perimeter was established around the building. The Officers were able to observe a male subject removing money from the cash register in the store. At this time they were unable to determine if the suspect was armed with a weapon.
Ptl. John Vogt and K9 – Deuce, responded to assist the officers at the scene. Ptl. Vogt gave a verbal command for anyone in the building to come out and surrender. After receiving no response Ptl. Vogt released K9-Deuce into the building via the broken window in lieu of the officers possibly having to use “deadly force” to apprehend the suspect. Immediately upon encountering K9 – Deuce the suspect surrendered to the K9 and the Officers.
During the course of the investigation the officers discovered that a neighboring pizza business had also been burglarized by the suspect. Officers assisting with the investigation were Lt. Bill Campbell, Ptl. Tom Schmidt, Sgt. Brian Hopely and Ptl. Bob Reichanek.
The Officers arrested a juvenile, age 17, from Ocean City, NJ. The juvenile was charged on a juvenile complaint summons and placed in a juvenile shelter in Bridgeton, NJ.
This is a classic example of how a uniformed officer may have been required to use deadly force in his apprehension of the suspect but was able to avoid this conflict by utilizing the K9 police trained dog.
