COURT HOUSE – Robert Greco Jr., former chairman of the Cumberland County Regular Republican Organization, was sentenced to four years in prison Jan. 8 after failing to repay $149,000 of stolen money from an elderly patient in his care, according to NJ.com.
Greco pleaded guilty to theft in June and appeared in Cape May County Superior Court Dec. 8 where it was agreed that he would pay back the stolen money on Dec. 22 in order to avoid a prison sentence.
Greco did not return the money and was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center just before Christmas. He was sentenced to four years in state prison when he was unable to pay back the money Jan. 8.
According to a previous release, authorities alleged Greco, owner and administrator of the East Creek Manor Rehabilitation Center, located in Eldora, admitted an elderly patient in December 2012. Upon admitting the victim into the facility, Greco convinced the victim to sign power of attorney documentation giving control of this patient’s financial portfolio to Greco.
Greco subsequently removed in excess of $149,000 from the victim’s bank accounts while the victim resided at the East Creek Rehabilitation Center. These funds were not directly related to the care of the victim but instead were used to pay for expenses that Greco and his business incurred.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit investigated the offenses which occurred in 2012 and 2013.
Greco was also originally charged with failure to file a tax return and failure to pay income taxes, but these charges were dropped during the plea agreement, according to a previous report.
