Disabled Vehicle Leads to Marijuana Seizure

By Jack Fichter

ERMA — Lower Township police arrested William Atkinson, 24, of North Cape May on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police received a call June 23 at about 8:30 p.m. of a disabled and possibly impaired driver in the area of Wuerker’s Pit, off Railroad Avenue in Erma. Police arrived to find a 1987 Monte Carol with Florida tags off the side of a dirt road.
According to police, when Atkinson opened the center console to produce documents, Officer Pat Greene observed several large bags of green vegetation, which he identified as marijuana. Atkinson was arrested and the vehicle was impounded.
Further search found marijuana in excess of 5 ounces, brass knuckles, packaging material and a switchblade knife. Atkinson was charged with driving under the influence. He was lodged in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
