Arrest Made in Murder Investigation

OCEAN CITY – Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Ocean City Police Chief Chad Callahan announce the arrest of Paul Kline, 49, for the charge of first degree murder. The arrest stems from a joint investigation into the death of a woman that was discovered inside an apartment, located in the 900 block Wesley Avenue in Ocean City, according to a release.

On July 22 at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers from the Ocean City Police Department responded to the apartment for a report of a deceased woman. Upon arrival, officers located the body of Denise Webber, 54, inside of her apartment.

Police allege during the investigation, it was determined that the roommate, Kline, caused her death. The two were in a relationship and lived together.

Kline was transported to the police station where he was charged with the following and transported to the Cape May County Correction Center: murder, first degree, aggravated assault, second degree, and endangering an injured victim, third degree.

Persons convicted of the crime of murder are subject to a term of imprisonment of 30 years to life in state prison, persons convicted of second degree crimes are subject to a term of imprisonment of five to 10, and third degree crimes are subject to three to five years in state prison.

While formal charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation with the autopsy scheduled for July 23 to determine the cause and manner of death.

The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
