Cape May News Notes 3.22.2006

By Rick Racela

Spring officially arrived yesterday, and summer will be here before you know it.
Parents, do you have plans for your children?
If not, perhaps you’ll want to register them for Camp Cape May, which runs from June 26 through Aug. 18 and meets at the Kiwanis Park on Madison Avenue on sunny days and at Convention Hall on rainy days.
There are activities for children ages four through 12, including outdoor education, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, walking excursions, parachute games, and more.
There are also field trips, one pool day per week, beach days, a parents’ day picnic, and more.
There are a variety of ways to register.
You can choose three days per week, an individual full week, or the entire eight weeks.
For more information call Cape May Civic Affairs at 884-9565 or stop by Convention Hall.
You don’t have to wait until summer to get your kids involved in an engaging program.
In fact, this Saturday marks the beginning of Cape May Stage’s Masterclass Acting Series for students, which runs through May 20.
Students in grade four and above are welcome to register for the workshops, which run from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cape May Stage’s theater space located at Lafayette and Bank Streets.
The classes are open to any student interested in acting, whether experienced or not.
The following classes are open for enrollment: March 25, Creating a Character; April 1, Musical Theater; April 8, Shakespeare; April 22, Stage Combat; April 29, Playwriting; May 6, Auditioning; May 13, Mask Work; and May 20, Advanced Acting with Text.
Each class can be purchased individually for just $10, or you can buy a bargain flex-pass series of 5 classes for $40.
Reservations are encouraged.
Call 884-1341 extension 7 to register or for more information.
In other news, the Sea Gals of Cape May are planning their annual Spring Festival Craft and Bake Sale, which will be taking place on April 29 at the Chalfonte Hotel from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Crafters who want to participate need to register now!
There is an entry fee of $25 and you must supply your own table or rack.
If you would like to participate, call Rose at 884-2848 or Ann at 884-8159.
If you’re not a crafter, that’s ok – just mark your calendars to stop by this great event, which benefits the Sea Gals charities.
If the Sea Gals are preparing for their Spring Festival event, then you know Spring Festival is on its way.
This year it runs from April 28 through May 7, and there are tons of great events planned, some of which you need to register for early if you want to get in on the fun.
For example, there is a Chocolate Fantasy Buffet planned for April 29, and that delicious event is sure to sell out early.
Another amazing gastronomical activity that I happen to know is very nearly sold out is the May 4 Chef’s Dine Around, which takes diners to five of Cape May’s most acclaimed restaurants for a different course and glass of wine.
There are also tea luncheons with lectures on gardening and Victorian gizmos, ghost tours and a dinner with psychic medium Craig McManus, and much, much more.
Call the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts at 884-5404 or visit their website at to reserve your tickets or to find out more about what is planned for Spring Festival.
Enjoy this first official week of spring, Cape Island, and please keep your event news coming to me.
I’d especially like to hear about any Easter activities you would like to see published here.
It’s easy! Just send an email to or call 898-8825.
