The Cape May County Library is offering free portrait classes starting October 2008. The classes will explore structure, gesture, composition and drawing techniques used to create a work of art from a human subject using pencil, charcoal, pastels, and more.Classes will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon at the following libraries:
Lower Cape Branch Library, 2600 Bayshore Rd., Villas (886-8999)
October 4, 11, 18 and 25
Upper Cape Branch Library, 2050 Route 631, Petersburg (628-2607)
November 1, 8, 15 and 22
Main Branch of the Library, 30 Mechanic St., Cape May Court House (463-6350)
January 3, 10, 17 and 24The classes will be taught by Cheryl Crews, a local artist, art teacher and art activist. Crews is a familiar dynamic force with regional museums, art centers and institutions and is known for her public murals. Currently, Crews is on the faculty of the Atlantic City Community College, lead teacher of Lower Township’s Youth Art Program through the Center for Community Arts, founding president of the Aquarian Project, and writer illustrator for “Sketches of Down Jersey” for the Down Jersey Magazine.There is no charge for the classes; however, registration and a Cape May County Library card are required.
