I always realize spring is about to arrive in one of two ways.
I either spot the first crocuses peeking out of the ground or I notice the birds singing in my backyard.
This week, both of these things happened, so spring must be on its way.

Of course, spring in Cape May means the arrival of beautiful birds passing through.
Every Friday this month at 10 a.m. you’re invited to the deck at the Nature Center’s Visitor Center, where you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the Cape May Harbor and surrounding waterfront.
A naturalist will join you and there will be scopes and extra binoculars available.
All are welcome and no pre-registration is required.

While I usually restrict the news in this column to Cape Island events, this next tidbit will barely take you off the island and is well worthwhile.
Historic Cold Spring Village welcomes the season with its third annual Spring Lecture Series.
Every Wednesday from March 22 through April 12 at 7 p.m. they will host a talk in their newly renovated Welcome Center Museum.
There is no admission fee for these lectures, which will be approximately an hour long.
The topic on March 22 is “The Forgotten Buildings of Cape May County,” presented by architectural historian Joan Berkey.
Seating is limited, so please arrive early.

The GFWC Women’s Community Club of Cape May will hold a meeting in Price Hall of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
Kathy Rubin will give a presentation on “Operation Smile,” which is a wonderful charity.
Light refreshments will be served at 12:30 p.m.
Guests are always welcome and women from Cape May and Lower Township may join our club by calling Jean at 522-0290 or Dot at 886-4554.

Yet another informative meeting is coming up at 10:30 a.m. on March 23, when the Greater Cape May Historical Society will hold a general membership meeting at the West Cape May Borough Hall.
This month’s speaker is Maureen Savage, whose topic is “Women in Politics.”

The library has come up with a fun way for kids to communicate about books.
Children of all ages are invited to the library’s website to participate in “Kids’ Reviews.”
The idea is that kids will review the books they have been reading and spread the word about fantastic books.
Sounds like fun to me.
