Butterflies a natural part of Cape May County

By On Deck Staff

One of the many natural delights awaiting visitors to Cape May County is the amazing number and variety of butterflies that can be found flitting about our beaches and gardens.
Patricia Sutton returns this summer to the Nature Center of Cape May with her popular Private Butterfly Garden Tours to amaze visitors and residents once again with the abundantly gorgeous flora and fauna thriving here.
Pat Sutton is a longtime naturalist, the former program director for the Cape May Bird Observatory, and an enthusiastic wildlife gardener. She is coauthor, along with her husband Clay, of the book How to Spot Butterflies.
She will lead weekend-long tours of her own and 21 other spectacular private, wildlife-friendly gardens for the Nature Center of Cape May.
The Private Butterfly Garden Tour Series is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see wildlife-friendly, butterfly and hummingbird-filled gardens throughout the county from Cape May Point north to Dennisville.
The selection of private gardens include features such as ponds, misters, drippers, unique arbors and seating, and dazzling plants glittering with a variety of butterflies and hummingbirds.
The Private Butterfly Garden Tour Series will be offered Aug. 15-17 and Sept. 12-14. Each day begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m.
The fee per day is $35, discounted to $25 for New Jersey Audubon Society members. Discounted weekend tour packages are available at $60 for members and $90 for nonmembers.
Participation is limited to 25 per day. Call the nature center at 609-898-8848 to reserve your spot and get further details.
Friday and Saturday participants are asked to meet at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave. The Sunday tour will begin at the Cape May Bird Observatory, 600 Rt. 47 North, near Goshen.
