Beach Water Report

By Jack Fichter

CREST HAVEN — County Health Department tests of 67 ocean and bay recreational sites June 25-27 found nine with unacceptable readings. These followed heavy rain that washes out storm sewers. Unacceptable readings were found in North Wildwood at 10th Avenue Beach, 18th Avenue Beach, and 24th Avenue Beach; in Wildwood at Montgomery Avenue Beach, and Bennett Avenue; In Wildwood Crest at Lavender Avenue, Forget-Me-Not, Miami Avenue and Orchid Avenue; and in Cape May at Poverty Beach, Philadelphia Avenue Beach and Queen Street. No beaches were closed and all retested within acceptable limits the following day. The state-set limit for enterococcus bacteria is 104 per 100-milliter sample. Health Department water monitoring tests of 28 environmental sites, where recreational activities are not recommended, found two locations with unacceptable readings: in the Sea Isle City lagoon at 42nd and 43rd streets and in North Wildwood at Maryland and Chestnut avenues. For updated reports, call the hotline, 465-2422.
