AVALON – “All that is good will endure.”
Those words at Avalon’s Sept. 11 Memorial Plaza, 21st and Dune Drive, are behind the 1,800-pound section of I-beam from the World Trade Center in New York City. That artifact stands 9’11” tall and leans at an angle of nine degrees and 11 minutes towards Manhattan.
The circular wall that surrounds the I-beam is located 9’11” away from the artifact itself. The wall is sloped to represent the ebb and flow of life, love, and water.
The artifact has a bend and compression point near its center caused by either heat from the fire at the center or from compression due to the collapse of the building, according to a borough release.
Avalon’s memorial to the attack on America Sept. 11, 2001, is one of three in Cape May County that contains pieces of the World Trade Center. The borough received its artifact in September 2011 and dedication was held Sept. 11, 2012.
An American flag that flew at the site of the terrorism when Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pa. flew at the memorial plaza during the dedication ceremony.
Additional features of the borough’s Sept. 11 Memorial Plaza are ground set-up lights that shine during evening hours.
An interpretive sign educates the public about the timeline of events on that day and serves as recognition for benefactors who made the plaza possible.
Stone Harbor
In Stone Harbor’s Freedom Park on 96th Street near the Fireman’s Memorial, is a small section of an I-beam from the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey that was recovered from the World Trade Center site.
The borough dedicated its memorial, funded through a county Open Space grant, Sept. 11, 2014.
Keynote speaker at the dedication in Stone Harbor was Stephen Kern, of the NY/NJ Port Authority. He provided a recollection of the fateful day and his continued efforts to “Never Forget.”
Cape May County
Near the main entrance to the Cape May County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road, Court House where a Patriot’s Day ceremony will be held Sept. 11 at 5 p.m., is a memorial that contains artifacts from each attack site: World Trade Center, Pentagon and Flight 93.
In the Freeholders’ Meeting Room is a Sept. 11 memorial flag fashioned into an American flag containing the names of all victims killed in the terrorists’ attacks Sept. 11, 2001.
