OCEAN CITY: (11.20) Two arrests were made which ended a month-long investigation into Anthony Dewitt’s Oct. 17 death.
County Prosecutor Robert Taylor and city Police Chief Robert E. Blevin on Nov. 17 announced the investigation into the death of Dewitt, 50, of the 600 block Wesley Avenue.
That investigation resulted in the arrests of Monica M. Miller, 37, of the 600 block Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, and Timothy Adams, 44, of the 200 block Patterson Avenue, Egg Harbor Township.
Both were charged with distributing heroin that was ingested by another person which caused the death of that person, a first-degree crime; and distribution of heroin in a quantity of less than one half ounce, a third-degree crime.
On Oct. 17, city police received a report of a possible death in an apartment house.
When they responded, they found Dewitt, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Members of the County Prosecutor’s Office, city police, Egg Harbor Township police and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office began a joint investigation.
The county Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Unit processed evidence on location.
The investigation revealed that Dewitt has allegedly ingested heroin prior to his death.
Dr. C. Blanchard of the state South Regional Medical Examiner’s Officer performed an autopsy.
The cause and manner of death are both pending her final determination.
Bail for Miller and Adams was set at $100,000 each, and they were remanded to county jail.
If convicted of the first-degree crime, they face up to 20 years and on the third degree crime, up to five years.
The investigation continues to determine if the suspected heroin was laced with fentanyl, a highly potent analgesic that has been linked to numerous overdose deaths in Cape May County and Philadelphia region.
