WILDWOOD – A 59-year-old Wildwood man was seriously injured Dec. 26 in a 6:42 a.m. hit-and-run crash that occurred at the intersection of Wildwood and Pacific avenues.
According to a Dec. 28 release, the Wildwood Police Department received a report of the crash that left a pedestrian injured on the roadside.
Responding Patrol Division officers found the victim who told them he was walking south on Pacific Avenue, crossing at Wildwood Avenue, when a dark-colored sedan turned from Pacific Avenue and struck him.
The driver, described as a white female, left her vehicle and told the victim that she would alert police; then she returned to the vehicle and left the scene.
The driver failed to alert the police and did not return to the scene of the collision.
The victim contacted the police by his cell phone. He was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center where it was learned that he sustained leg injuries that required surgery.
During the investigation by the Wildwood Police Detective Division and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Kathleen Smith, 44, of Wildwood.
She was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury and endangering an injured victim.
Those charges were placed on a summon complaint, and Smith was released in accordance with the state’s Criminal Justice Reform Act.
The above was received from a law enforcement agency. The person named is innocent unless proven otherwise.
