Transformer Wire Snaps, Darkens Rio Grande

By Al Campbell

RIO GRANDE — A wire from an electrical transformer atop a pole on Pennsylvania Avenue here snapped, caused some “fireworks,” according to a firefighter, then darkened portions of this community from 2:46 p.m. until 3:18 p.m.
In that short time, traffic signals at Route 47 and the Sixth Street intersection, leading to Shop Rite and other stores in the Rio Grande Plaza went dark. Bank of America went dark, as did the Herald Newspaper’s offices.
Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Company sent an engine to Pennsylvania Avenue to monitor the downed wire until Atlantic City Electric workers arrived and rectified the problem and restored power.
