MAYVILLE — A 15-year-old who was admitted to the hospital after being struck by car while skateboarding on Route 9 in the early morning hours of Sat. Aug. 4 has had his condition upgraded from critical to stable.
According to a police report, officers were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at 12:50 a.m. where they found the juvenile in the grass off the roadway. The driver of the vehicle, Samuel Carabello III, 19, of Woodbine, was also on the scene.
An investigation revealed the juvenile was skateboarding north on Route 9. Carabello, driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima, was driving southbound. While in a passing zone, Carabello entered the northbound lane of the highway in order to pass a vehicle. Carabello struck the juvenile in the northbound lane, ran left off the roadway and struck a utility pole.
The juvenile was flown to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center and was initially listed in critical condition. Carabello was not injured.
During the investigation it was found Carabello’s driver’s license was suspended. Based on the suspension, he was charged with causing serious body injury during a motor vehicle accident while driving while suspended, a fourth degree crime. He was also issued summonses for driving with a suspended license and driving after hours for a provisional driver. Carabello was released on his own recognizance.
The investigation was conducted by Middle Township Patrol Division and Major Crimes Unit. The Middle Township Fatal Crash Team and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Middle Township Emergency Medical Services, Medic 5 and Cape May Court House Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
