AVALON – The Avalon Volunteer Fire Department rescued a dog that was trapped underneath a dock in the back bay off 42nd Street on New Year’s Eve, according to the Avalon Police Department.
According to a release, just before 10:30 a.m. Dec. 31, police dispatch received a 911 call, alerting authorities of the drowning dog.
Officers who initially arrived on scene attempted to rescue the dog with a flotation device but could not reach the animal, which was all the way underneath the dock but able to breathe from a small pocket of air, according to a borough press release.
Then, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Ferguson arrived and jumped into the bay with a life jacket. His attempts to rescue the dog were unsuccessful.
When responding trucks from the Avalon and Stone Harbor Volunteer fire departments arrived, Avalon Fire Inspector Lisa Sasdelli jumped into the water and was able to rescue the dog, according to the police department’s statement.
The dog was taken to a veterinarian for further evaluation.
