Railroad Crossings Marked as Exempt

By Jack Fichter

ERMA- Signs are installed at the railroad tracks at Route 9 at Tabernacle Road marking the crossings as exempt. Trains have not operated on the track for more than one year.
The State Department of Transportation approved Lower Township’s request for “Exempt Crossing” status for the railroad crossings at Breakwater and Tabernacle roads between Seashore Road and Route 9.
The new status eliminates the requirement for school buses, fuel trucks, Fare Free Transportation, and others to stop at the railroad crossings.
The Commissioner of DOT has ordered Cape May Seashore Lines to install at each crossing “Exempt” signs in conformance with Uniformed Traffic Control Devices. The signs are to be installed by Feb. 28.
