Pair of Avalon Teens Rescued 35 Miles at Sea

By Herald Staff

CAPE MAY — The Coast Guard and a “good Samaritan” rescued two teenage boys from Avalon 35 miles east of here, Aug. 27 after the 16-foot boat the teens were on broke down.
Rescued were Gus Fellenbaum, 15, and Devon Johnson, 14, both of Avalon.
The two teenagers, who lost radio communications when their boat broke down, were spotted by the crew of The Denny Striper Show, a 25-foot recreational boat.
The “good Samaritan” contacted the Coast Guard and stayed on scene until the Coast Guard arrived. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May arrived on scene at about 2:15 p.m., took the two teenagers aboard and were in the process of towing the disabled boat to the Coast Guard station at 4:20 p.m.
The teenagers will be released to the custody of their parents.
“If it weren’t for the crew of The Denny Striper Show, we may not have known there was any trouble,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Kyle Gerkens, a search and rescue coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Field Office Atlantic City.
“The teenagers didn’t tell anyone where they were going, and they owe a huge debt of gratitude to the “good Samaritan” for finding them,” he said.
