OCEAN CITY — On Monday, Sept. 29, at 3:20 p.m. the Ocean City Police and Ocean City Fire Departments responded to a water rescue assignment in the ocean near 15th Street.
According to police, the caller, Timothy Mills, reported two subjects were in the water and being carried away from the shoreline. Both subjects appeared to be having difficulty fighting the currents and returning to shore.
Patrolman Bob Reichanek, Sgt. Jon Campo, Sgt. Dennis Jones and Lt. Bill Campbell responded to the beach to assist with the water rescue along with members of the Fire Department.
Two subjects were seen in the water having difficulty swimming.
One subject was approximately a quarter mile out, just off the Fishing Pier at 14th Street.
The other subject was approximately 200 yards out drifting southward closer to 15th Street.
Reichanek, Campo and Campbell entered the water utilizing life saving equipment from their patrol vehicles, as Jones assumed incident command.
The officers were able to reach the two subjects in distress and stabilize them in the water.
The Fire Department responded to the victims, Sean Fitzgerald, 26, and Jason Chasz, 23, both of Philadelphia by using their Wave Runner which was launched at the 12th Street beach.
All persons were safely removed from the surf and taken to shore through the cooperative efforts of the police and fire personnel.
Fitzgerald and Chasz were taken to Shore Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. Neither appeared to be injured during the incident.
