North Cape May Man Arrested for DWI, Hit-and-Run Accident

By Herald Staff

COLD SPRING — A North Cape May man was arrested July 11 after he allegedly caused an accident on Seashore Road Canal Bridge while driving intoxicated, then fled the scene.
According to Lower Township police, at about 10:35 p.m. they received a 9-1-1 call that reported a Ford Taurus headed north had just struck a motorist as she traveled south atop the bridge.
The female caller told police the other vehicle entered her lane of travel and hit her car, which also contained her three small children at the time of the accident.
The driver of the Taurus fled the scene.
A short time later, Detective Edward Dougherty of Lower Township Police Department saw a black Ford Taurus with flat front tire driving erratically in the 600 block of Eldredge Avenue, North Cape May.
He conducted a motor vehicle stop and the driver of that vehicle was identified as Kristophe Krauter, 33, of the 600 block of Eldredge Avenue. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, careless driving, and open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle.
After being tested at Police Headquarters, due to his allegedly high blood alcohol content, police asked Lower Township Rescue Squad to transport Krauter to Cape Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.
Patrolman Jennifer Anzelone and Patrolman William McPherson conducted the investigation.
