New York Fishing Vessel Hits Middle Thorofare Bridge

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

LOWER— A 90 foot commercial fishing vessel Jason & Danielle of Montauk, NY struck the Middle Thorofare Bridge at around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug 20.
According to the Coast Guard, the vessel lost its propulsion system and hit the bridge fendering system, then became wedged under the bridge. The Coast Guard responded to the scene from Station Cape May; however, the boat’s captain refused any assistance, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.
The vessel eventually freed itself under its own power. The vessel was then escorted by the Coast Guard to Lund’s Marina, where the vessel was boarded and inspected by the Coast Guard, the spokesperson said.
The county engineer was called to the scene to inspect the bridge, which did sustain some damage.
No injuries were reported. The Coast Guard is investigating.
Staff reporter Jack Fichter contributed to this report.
