Man Killed in Accident, Driver Charged

BURLEIGH – A Court House man was killed Jan. 18 after the vehicle he was traveling in as a passenger struck a grove trees on Shunpike Road. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with DUI a short time later after he allegedly left the scene of the accident.
According to Middle Township police, they responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash Jan. 18 at 8:24 p.m.
Officers responding to the scene found a red Jeep Grand Cherokee with extensive damage in the wooded shoulder of the road. The sole passenger of the Grand Cherokee, identified as Jibreel Masud, 27, of Court House, had been ejected and found a short distance away from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Police stated the driver left the scene.
The driver, identified as Bruce Moffitt Jr., 23, of Court House was located a short time later and transported to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
A preliminary investigation by police revealed the vehicle had crashed into trees after Moffitt lost control of his vehicle as he was traveling north on Shunpike Road in the area of Oyster Road.
Moffitt was charged with driving while intoxicated; reckless driving; leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death; and first-degree aggravated manslaughter. He was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $250,000 bail.
Assisting with the scene were fire companies from Court House, Green Creek and Goshen. Shunpike Road was closed for approximately four hours.
The case remains under investigation by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Middle Township Major Crimes Unit.
