SOUTH DENNIS – State Police, responding to an initial hit-and-run accident involving four vehicles and the outside railing of a local eatery, apprehended an alleged runaway driver a mile from the scene after he lost control of the 1994 Nissan Pathfinder vehicle when it left the roadway.
According to a police report, on Jan. 6 at 5:49 p.m. police responded to the report of the hit-and-run accident at Southville Corner Restaurant, 780 Route 47.
Upon investigation police found the driver of the Pathfinder, identified as Steven Mullen, was traveling southbound on Route 47 when he made a hard left turn into the restaurant’s parking lot without slowing down.
Mullen was unable to stop his vehicle and collided with the handrails of the eatery’s front steps. The Pathfinder then collided with a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse which was parked in front of the restaurant.
Police stated Mullen continued through the parking lot, colliding with a 2002 Dodge Caravan, which was subsequently pushed into a 2012 Kia Forte.
“Mullen then drove through the bushes to exit the parking lot and proceeded southbound on County Road 657,” stated the report. “No one was hurt during these collisions.”
Shortly thereafter, approximately one mile from the restaurant, the Pathfinder left the roadway and overturned when Mullen lost control of the vehicle. It came to rest in the tree line of the highway’s shoulder.
Mullen was transported from the scene via Medivac to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with lacerations and a compound fracture of his left arm as well as other minor injuries, said police.
Mullen was charged with DUI as well as other related offenses. Investigation into the accident remains ongoing.
Responding to the scene were rescue personnel from New Jersey State Police, Dennis Volunteer Fire Company and Belleplain EMS.
