VINELAND — State Police are investigating a seven vehicle crash here at milepost 35 on Route 55 that left one dead and several injured, including a Lower Township man who is listed in critical condition, on Friday, Jan. 16 at 8:56 p.m.
According to State Police, a 1998 Ford Ranger driven by Claudio Kuzmicz, 41, of Vineland was traveling northbound on Route 55 and for an unknown reason ran off the highway and crossed into the center median. The Ford Ranger then overturned several times and came to rest in the right southbound lane where it was struck by several other vehicles that were traveling southbound.
Kuzmicz was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Tracy Doran of the Southern Regional Medical Examiners Office. Kuzmicz, daughters, ages 15 and 10, were passengers in the vehicle. They were transported to Vineland Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
Lower Township resident Theodore M. Ferrante, 63, driver of one of seven vehicles involved in the chain-reaction collision was transported to Vineland Regional Medical Center where it was determined he suffered a skull fracture and was subsequently transferred to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Trauma Unit in Atlantic City where he is listed in critical condition.
A passenger in Ferrante’s vehicle identified as Gretchin Ferrante, 56, also of Lower, was transported to Vineland Regional Medical Center with an ankle injury. A 15-year-old female also traveling in Ferrante’s vehicle was uninjured, according to State Police.
Six people total were transported to area hospitals, according to State Police.
Route 55 was shut down for several hours as members of the State Police Fatal Accident Unit and Crime Unit investigated the crash.
The Vineland Fire Department, Millville Rescue Squad, Underwood Paramedics, Vineland Police and State Police from Port Norris and Bridgeton stations were dispatched to the scene and were assisted by Cumberland County Fire Police.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper C. Lobaza of the Port Norris Station.
