Driver Charged with DWI after Hit-and-Run Crash

By Press Release

NORTH CAPE MAY — At approximately 9:21 p.m. Nov. 18, the Lower Township Police Department was notified of a hit-and-run motor vehicle crash that had just occurred on Sunnyside Drive, North Cape May.
When Lower Township police arrived they observed a black  Ford Taurus sedan with front-end damage parked on Apple Blossom Drive.
Police observed a male and female walking away from the vehicle. The caller then approached officers and advised that the two were the occupants of the vehicle involved in the  crash.
The driver was identified as Edward C. Shaw Jr., of Del Haven. Shaw admitted to operating the vehicle and was subsequently placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated, following field sobriety testing.
Crash investigation revealed that Shaw had been driving north on Sunnyside Drive when he failed to keep right, and struck a parked vehicle.  The impact caused disabling damage to Shaw’s vehicle, making his attempts to leave the scene futile.
The vehicle was towed and impounded in accordance with John’s Law.
Shaw was issued six motor vehicle summonses as a result of the crash: driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit breath samples, driving while suspended, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident.
This crash was investigated by Patrol Officers Louis Bartleson and Matthew Gamble, with assistance from Patrol Officers Stephen Flitcroft, Eric Danze and Special Officer Samuel Gellura.
