WILDWOOD – The city cut the ribbon on several new amenities at the Byrne Community Center complex on Aug. 1, including a new Americans With Disabilities Act-inclusive playground and more.
The recreation complex was funded by the city and the county in two phases, with more than $4 million in county open space funding dedicated to the project. The upgrades to the complex, located on Park Boulevard between West Youngs Avenue and West Spicer Avenue, include the playground, a new track and bicycle amenities.
In addition, a state-of-the-art community fitness facility is designed to help residents and visitors of all ages reach their recreational and fitness goals.
The project was funded through the county Open Space Board in a two-phase, shared services agreement between Wildwood and the county. Phase One provided $2.9 million and was approved in February 2022. Phase Two provided $1.1 million in February of 2023. Total construction costs topped $4.6 million.
The project design was led by Doug Rohmeyer, previously with CME Associates, now with Colliers Engineering. FieldTurf and Ben Shaffer Recreation were the construction contractors for the project.
