Middle Township School District Celebrates a Big Dream for Little Libraries

Middle Township administrators and teachers recently celebrated the upcoming installation of district-wide Little Free Libraries. The project was spear-headed by the middle school’s special education literacy teacher, Jennifer Heun, who retired after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

COURT HOUSE – Middle Township School District (MTSD) teacher Jennifer Heun’s big dream of installing Little Free Libraries across the district is coming true.

Heun, a middle school special education literacy teacher, has worked diligently to install these “take a book, share a book” free book exchange libraries for more than a year to support students on their reading journeys.

After receiving a cancer diagnosis, Heun decided to retire after teaching in Middle Township schools for roughly 20 years. However, her fellow teachers and district administrators would not allow the illness to halt her vision, and are continuing to complete the project she inspired.

Recently, many of those involved with the Little Free Libraries project came together at the middle school library to celebrate as they near the final steps and give the book exchange a home in every MTSD school building. Those who attended include Dr. David Salvo, Dr. Toni Lehman, Dr. Sharon Rementer, Chris Paskalides, Dennis Roberts, Jeff Ortman, Josh McCarty, Sandi Garrison-Maund, Amy McGarrity, Cindy Arnold, Harlee Fisher, Pam Shute, Jackie Mendel, Donia Mills, and Erin Majane – among others.

“Having Little Free Libraries available across the district will encourage our students to continue their love of reading and give them access to a variety of literary genres,” said MTSD Superintendent Dr. David Salvo. “Jen is devoted to our school families and a true inspiration to us all, we are thrilled to see her dream come to fruition.”

The event not only excited students and their families about the upcoming addition to their schools, but it also brought joy to Heun as she continues to battle the disease.
