COURT HOUSE – The Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township, connecting Diamond Beach to Cape May, will be closed to vehicular, pedestrian, and bike traffic, effective August 18, 2024, for an undetermined time.

The drive shaft motor that opens the bridge on demand failed at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The bridge electrical engineers performed many tests, concluding that the motor was inoperable and irreparable.

The Bridge Commission is currently reviewing all options available both nationally and globally to source this highly specialized motor with the goal of replacement as soon as possible, but the best-case scenario taking many weeks.

The Middle Thorofare Bridge will remain in the up position as vessels have the right of way; the commercial fishing industry needs ocean and dock access.

More information will be provided as it becomes available. All businesses remain open on both sides of the bridge.
