COURT HOUSE – Middle Township will be seeking bids for solid waste and recyclables collection and disposal.

At the Township Committee meeting Monday, April 22, the governing body appointed a tabulation committee to work on the bids, which are expected to be opened in mid-July.

The township’s current vendor is Gold Medal Environmental.

In 2022, Gold Medal sought added compensation above contract requirements from several of its Cape May County customers due to the impact of high fuel prices and staffing issues related to the pandemic.

The company was perceived by some county towns as trying to force higher rates immediately before the influx of summer crowds. Ocean City, North Wildwood and Avalon were among the towns that changed vendors and moved away from Gold Medal by 2023.

At the time, Middle Township Mayor Tim Donohue responded to a question from the public at a Township Committee meeting by saying no change from Gold Medal was being planned.

Two years later, with the contract ending, new bidding will occur. The township presents a challenge to bidders as the largest municipality in the county by land area.
