Middle Backs Plan to Reduce Speed on Route 147 section

By Vince Conti

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP — The Township Committee is supporting the state Department of Transportation’s plan to lower the speed limit from 50 to 40 miles per hour on Route 147 from Ocean Drive to the North Wildwood-Middle Township Corporate Line. This is approximately from milepost 2.86 to milepost 3.24.

The DOT says several inquiries from residents and officials prompted a speed limit study. The agency noted the residential and commercial nature of the area, the absence of deceleration/acceleration lanes at key intersections, a higher density of driveways along the roadway and significant seasonal increases in traffic.

The DOT found that the revision of the speed limit in the area is warranted. The agency requested a resolution of support from Middle, which was approved by the Township Committee Oct. 7.
