The Cape May Point Arts & Science Center is excited to welcome Melissa Laurino as its Marine Science Advisor. A Coast Guard 100-ton Master Captain and experienced marine biologist, Melissa holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Marine Biology and Data Science from Stockton University and brings extensive expertise in studying Cape May’s marine mammal populations.
Since 2011, Melissa has documented over 500 bottlenose dolphins and 230 humpback whales through photo-identification, contributing to major research efforts like the Mid-Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin Catalog and the Mid-Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog. Her work has advanced understanding of migration patterns, population health, and seasonal behaviors of these marine mammals along New Jersey’s coast.
Melissa recently completed the center’s first season of vessel-based surveys, collecting critical data on bottlenose dolphins, harbor porpoises, and humpback whales. “Every day in marine science is different,” Melissa shared. “Our oceans connect us all, and I’m excited to expand research and engage the Cape May community in ocean conservation.”
She is also preparing for the upcoming Marine Science Symposium, a weekend event featuring keynote speakers, student discussions, and hands-on learning opportunities. “The symposium is an inspiring opportunity to empower students, researchers, and our community,” Melissa said. Save the date for 5/30-6/1!
The Cape May Point Arts & Science Center is pleased to have Melissa on board to expand marine research and promote ocean stewardship throughout Cape May and beyond.
