Mayor’s Appointment of His Son Is Nepotism

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my deep concern and strong disapproval regarding Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr.’s recent decision to appoint his son to the Wildwood Planning/Zoning Board of Adjustment, as reported on April 23, 2025.

The mayor’s actions are a blatant example of nepotism, regardless of how he tries to redefine it. Choosing a family member over a qualified, experienced public servant like Commissioner Krista McConnell is not only irresponsible but disrespectful to the citizens of Wildwood. It sends the message that loyalty to the mayor outweighs experience, dedication and public trust.

Positions of public service should be awarded based on merit, not family ties. Our city deserves leaders who make decisions that put the best interests of the community first, not their personal interests. Even if there is no financial compensation involved, the influence and responsibilities tied to a planning and zoning board position are far too important to be handed out as a favor to a relative.

Mayor Troiano’s decision undermines public confidence in our local government and damages the integrity of the appointment process. Wildwood has been under enough negative scrutiny and needs to play by the rules. Wildwood deserves better leadership – leadership that values fairness, transparency and accountability.
