CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – A Bridgeton man has been arrested after he displayed an assault-style rifle from the driver’s side of a car window in Wildwood, officials said.
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Wildwood Police Department Chief Joseph Murphy said that Ahmed Omera, 21, was arrested after Wildwood police were alerted to the incident on May 21.
Video footage capturing the incident was obtained and reviewed by the Wildwood Police Department, and a joint investigation was initiated with the Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit.
The driver subsequently was identified as Omera, and on May 22 a search warrant was executed at Omera’s residence, located in the 300 west block of Broad Street in Bridgeton.
During the search, Omera was taken into custody without incident, and an assault-style rifle believed to be the weapon seen in the Wildwood incident was recovered. The search was carried out with the assistance of the State Police TEAMS Unit, the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bridgeton Police Department.
Omera has been charged with third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and is lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Center pending a detention hearing.
The investigation is ongoing. Sutherland and Murphy urged anyone who may have additional information to contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit at 609-465-1135, the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division at 609-522-0222 or anonymously through the Prosecutor’s Office website at cmcpo.tips.
