From Rutgers Cooperative Extension

Are you concerned about the environment and want to learn how to make a difference? Become an Environmental Steward in Cape May County. Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County will offer the Rutgers Environmental Steward Program starting January 21, 2025. A Rutgers Environmental Steward is a volunteer that is trained in the important environmental issues affecting New Jersey and works to help solve local environmental problems.

Cape May County residents who are interested in improving the environment can learn how to create a conservation project in their community by joining the volunteer program that helps members of the public learn specific steps leading to a positive impact on local ecosystem. Weekly classes taught by leading researchers from Rutgers, government, and the nonprofit sector will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays starting January 21, 2025. Approximately eleven online and five in-person sessions will be held along with field trips to environmentally significant sites. Topics will include climate change, solid waste, recycling, soil health, alternative energy, water quality, habitat conservation, pollinator protection, and environmental policy.

Dr. Claudia Gil Arroyo, Agriculture Agent for Cape May County, said, “I believe that Rutgers Environmental Steward Program is a great fit for Cape May County. The unique landscape of our county presents a variety of environmental concerns, from dune replenishment and saltwater intrusion to invasive species mitigation and wildlife habitat restoration. The opportunities for trained volunteers for projects and educational outreach are numerous.”

Anyone can become an Environmental Steward! No previous experience needed. You simply need a passion for the environment, a desire to learn, and a willingness to volunteer to create positive change in your community. Participants will be required to complete a 60-hour project in their community to become certified. The cost for the program is $325. Registration is required.
