Volunteers Host Annual Special Olympics Competition, Proclaiming Every Participant A Winner

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY— On August 23, over 50 Olympians with developmental disabilities participated in the 21st Annual Joe Distasio Special Olympics Crabbing Competition in Sea Isle City. The event was hosted by the Sea Isle City Italian American Club, the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City and the Townsend Inlet Yacht Club.
The festivities began with a crabbing tournament, which took place on the docks of both yacht clubs during the morning hours. After numerous crabs and other interesting items were pulled from the bay, the Olympians were treated to a luncheon at Kix-McNutley’s on 63rd Street, which was personally served by members of the Italian American Club. After the meal, Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio presented trophies to the participants who caught the largest crab, the most crabs and also the most unusual item pulled from the bay (a small shark).
During the presentation, the mayor welcomed all of the competitors, congratulated everyone on their crabbing efforts and proclaimed each participant a winner. The mayor then led the crowd in a rousing series of chants, including “Go Eagles!” and “Go Phillies!”
