PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Phillies, in need of outfield depth, plan to sign Outfielder Matt Szczur, a graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School and Villanova University, to a minor league contract, sources report, as of Dec. 13.
Szczur is known for being a member of the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. He was traded to the San Diego Padres in 2017, and spent his 2019 season in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization.
Sources say that the deal includes an invitation to spring training, allowing Szczur the opportunity to play with Phillies outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper.
